Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, founded FIRST (ForInspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 toinspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people.FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence,knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursueopportunities in science, technology, and engineering.  With thesupport of many of the world’s most well-known companies, thenon-profit organization hosts the FIRST Robotics Competition for highschool students and the FIRST LEGO League for children 9-14 years old.

The Harvard Club of South Africa is a registered section 21 company andits main aim is the preserve the heritage of the Harvard or T-6 Texanaircraft as part of South Africa’s aviation heritage for as long aseconomically viable. As part of the Club’s “aviation-awarness program,“we teach any willing youngsters the basics of flight, aircraftfmaintenance, general apro procedures and aircraft marshalling.

Memo: The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science andTechnology) Robotics Competition is a program that challenges highschool students—working with professional and university mentors—todesign and build a robot to contend in competitions that measure theeffectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and thedetermination of students.  Teams in the Colorado Regional FIRSTRobotics Competition vie for regional awards and a spot at theFIRST Championship.
